My favorite was Jack.

A lot of really good 4-5 star reads, too. And only one 3-slice ratings that was a stellar book that just didn’t hit me right, perhaps. I stand by my 2 for Klara and the Sun.

I visited North Dakota, Spokane Washington (again), England, an invented Tropical island and the tropics of the South Pacific, St. Louis MO, an outer space planet, up a tree, around the globe and a bit of Mars with Helen Macdonald, and a college town with Ann Patchett.

Fave quote?

Had my heart an unbroken string, your touch would set it trembling.

from Jack by marilynne robinson

It was an amazing month. FULL on #20BooksofSummer!

pieratingsml

Pie? Stephen Florida had cherry pie, The House in the Cerulean had pie, Hamnet mentions pie as did Klara – but more reference to pie triangles. Jack has pie.

I made a Cherry Rhubarb Pie – for Father’s Day and an Apple Pie for some reason I forget.

“Hate is loud, but I think you’ll learn it’s because it’s only a few people shouting, desperate to be heard. You might not ever be able to change their minds, but so long as your remember you’re not alone, you will overcome.”

What was YOUR favorite book of June?

Tradeback = __0___were paperback

Count from the library =  _2_, TCM and D,T — 5 purchased , 1 given to me (Thanks Ellen!)

pieratingsml

My favorite was The Cold Millions, maybe? Huh, a lot of really good 4 star reads, too. Detransition, Baby was great. Swann was one I was glad to read; Salvage the Bones, too. And The Book of Longings! I really can’t say ANY of these 8 were in any way disappointing.

I visited France and I visited the Middle East at the time of Christ. Mississippi by the coast, Dublin Ireland, Brooklyn NYC, Ontario Canada, Spokane Washington at the turn of the century, and Ohio.

I want to count No One is Talking About This as nonfiction; apparently it is an novel.

Fave quote?

“It isn’t important.” “Everything’s important.” “I can’t remember what I was going to say.” She looked down at her rhubarb pie and pledged herself not to jeopardize what was left of the evening.

from SWANN by Carol shields

It was a good month. Bring on #20BooksofSummer!

pieratingsml

Pie? Swann had pie. So did Salvage the Bones and The Cold Millions. and the Lockwood had a pie chart. It counts.

I made a Strawberry Rhubarb Pie with a friend last week. Will have to make another for June 9, this pie’s official day.

Update April 2021 in Review

 Monthly Recap Time!

I finished _13_ books in April. Total for the year: 41 (only 19 mention pie)

Total page count (including print page count for books I listen-read) = __2418__, + Q1 = 8903 TOTAL pages for the year.

One audiobook.

Hardcover = 2

eBook (Kindle or Libby) = 1

Tradeback = 3, 6 series books (The Green Mile) were paperback

Count from the library =  _2_, remainder purchased , 2 given to me.

pieratingsml

My favorite was A Tale for the Time Being. But all of them were 4-5 stars! no, that isn’t accurate but even my 3 stars were enjoyable. A really cool literary-coinky-dink wasa couple of times King mentioned “for the time being” and I fondly thought of the Ozeki. I will likely always smile when I see that phrase now.

I visited North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Delaware in Proud Shoes; The Green Mile was Southern (was it Alabama?) The Tenth Muse got me into Indiana again and over to Germany; A Tale for the Time Being was set in Japan and British Columbia. Slamming Open the Door, a poetry collection processing the poet’s grief for the murder of her daughter, brought me to a crime scene and a funeral. Four books nonfiction.

AND THE READALONG #GREENMILEALONG WITH Melissa was a great time! Thank you Ti, Laurie, Maree, and Sandy for joining in! (and thank you to the rest for putting up with my many posts.)

My TOB Fan page now shows the short list titles highlighted in teal font. I have procured Stephen Florida as the last of what I need for that – I’m still slogging through the audio of Skippy Dies. (Ugh – I’m not really into it.) I am tempted to reread a few, too, but not sure how realistic.

A few classics – Proud Shoes pub’d in 1956 and the Pie Cookbook, a gift to me from my aunt and a gift to her from my grandmother, was introduced in 1965. I love it! It has some really interesting combinations and new-to-me techniques. I am looking forward to trying a lot of the selections. Especially, because, as all of us good housewives know, men like fruit pie. LOL

pieratingsml

Three featured a pie mention, with The Green Mile mentioning pie, moon pie and our narrator’s wife’s famous apple pie. King never disappoints. I seriously wonder if all his books have a pie mention… Proud Shoes had a particularly nice pie story – British books and US Southern books often have pie. Of course, the pie cookbook has pie! Are you ready for pie?

April had a birthday where the required pie served is Pecan. April 28 is Blueberry Pie Day and I missed April 3rd’s Chocolate Mousse Pie Day. I made Pineapple because; [thinking…] I don’t remember why. It was yummy and I liked the post linking it to books. ICYMI.

Pineapple Pie

 May 8 is Coconut Cream Pie Day, May 13 is Apple Pie Day. I think I’m going to make this for Mother’s Day.

Update Mar 31 2021

 Monthly Recap Time!

I finished _12_ books in March. This makes 27 for the year, for first quarter.

Total page count (including print page count for books I listen-read) = __2264__, + JanFeb = 6485 TOTAL pages for the year.

One audiobook plus two short stories plus 2 quick-memoirs summed to _~19__ hours.

Hardcover = 1, signed by the author!

eBook (Kindle or Libby) = 3

Tradeback = 3

Count from the library =  _?_, remainder purchased or given to me. (I forget…)

pieratingsml

My favorite was The Resisters.

Three featured a pie mention, all of them were TOB: The Resisters had the BEST mentions, with Down Days mentioning Steak & Kidney Pie, The People in the Trees featured LEECH PIE. Ugh.

I visited South America, the Future East Coast US, Argentina Maybe, Italy, Germany, Scotland, France, California, Florida, Missouri, Chicago, Micronesia, Stanford/CA & Harvard/BostonMA&NIH/DC,  and Indiana?

Most published in 2020 – all for the TOB. One in 2013, 2017, 2018, 2019.

TOB WRAPS UP TODAY! I submitted Interior Chinatown to win over The Vanishing Half 11-6. I rated both 4 stars but appreciate IC as unique. TVH has pie, though, so that is a point in favor.

Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu WINS! and I win at my guess but not the random draw…

Also, I created a TOB Fan page to track books from the long list that I still need to read for this fall’s Tourney of Faves. I think the shortlist will be pub’d soon.

March had Pi Day!

I mailed 1 books to NC via BookMooch. I received 1 book — then realized I own a copy already. (So, if you would like a copy of Let the Great World Spin, hit me up.)

 Chocolate Mousse Pie Day is April 3rd.

Update Feb 28 2021 Sunday

Monthly Recap Time!

I finished _9_ books in February. This makes 15 for the year so far.

Total page count (including print page count for books I listen-read) = __2736__, + 1485 Jan = 4221 TOTAL pages for the year so far. 35% of yearly goal? wow.

The three audiobooks summed to _~42__ hours. (and 18 minutes)

Hardcover = 2

eBook (Kindle or Libby) = 2

Tradeback = 2

Count from the library =  _3_, remainder purchased or given to me.

My favorite was Piranesi.pieratingsml

Seven featured a pie mention: 2 Apple, Strawberry Tart, lots of generic “pie”.

I visited California a few times, New Mexico, a few days in Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania and possibly New England (woot! for a Newport RI mention); international travels took me to Japan, Scotland and England, and possibly another out of this world dimension (Piranesi)

Most published in 2020 – all for the TOB. One in 2017, the one nonfiction; memoir/humor.

Cherry Pie Day was February 20th and here a photo of the meringue crust: then I filled it with cherry pie filling (from a can) and then, finally a slice of it:

pieratingsml

Stats for LetterMo:  I thank the many of you who wrote me! WOOT. I received _28_ pieces of correspondence. My tracking is usually suspect but my official chart says I mailed 112 pieces, averaging to 4 per day.

Mailed to 28 states and three countries: UK, New Zealand and Germany.

I mailed 3 books – one to RI (Deacon King Kong to Sarah), one to ME (The Vanishing Half to Auntie Lil), and one to NJ (Telephone to Ellen of the Garden State).

Happy Chocolate Soufflé Day! Banana Cream Pie Day is March 2nd.

Update Jan 31 2021 Sunday

January Recap! Going to make this a habit. Maybe I create the last-day-of-the-month posts in advance and add to each with each book completed?  Always a goal, right?

I finished 6 books, have 3 underway right now.

If I count the hardcover page count rather than hours in my sums when I consider the books I listen-read, I get a total of 1485. Otherwise it is 901. I’m still wrestling with my attempt to keep THIS page count accurate with whatever goodreads calculates — they don’t do great at accurate hour counts for audiobooks.

The two audiobooks summed to 17 hours.

One in hardcover, one eBook (Kindle), two tradeback. Three library loans, three purchased.

My favorite has to be Luster by Raven Leilani. All were pretty worthy and enjoyable, recommendable. Memorial was my least favorite. Of course, A Village Life as a poetry collection received a high rating; quite moving and intense.

pieratingsml

Three of the six featured a pie mention: Apple, Caramel, Chitlin. I visited Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Texas, California and Georgia. Mostly US-centric but one hopped over to Ghana for a few scenes. Four books had black protagonists; one of these shared MCs with a Japanese American. This same title would be LGBTQ+.

Four published in 2020 – all for the TOB. One in 2009, one in 1999. One nonfiction; about dogs. One poetry. Only one author of the male gender, as far as I know.

I made a few pies – including the Elvis Pie I made for Christmas. See this post on my First Book 2021 (Long Bright River).

I made a RhuBlue (BlueRhu? RhuBerry?) for my mom’s birthday:

MR are her initials.

pieratingsml

Bring on February where my focus will be LetterMo. Write me a letter and I must reply in kind.
