MOTIVATION for READING: I have seen this book and its companions – seems to be in a trio of Swedish reads by Backman all published together but aren’t quite related, from what I understand.
WHAT’s it ABOUT: Old curmudgeon of a widower keeps getting sucked in to help his neighbors when all he really wants to do is NOT. (Trying to maintain a spoiler-free zone.)
WHAT’s GOOD: It’s pleasantly amusing, at times.
What’s NOT so good: I just don’t get why this has been declared so many people’s “Best of the Year!”. It’s a nice story, but it is not a great book.
FINAL THOUGHTS: It’s OK. and yea, gosh darn it, I cried a little. I own another book by this guy (can’t remember which – the one with the little girl.) I’ll read it eventually, maybe.
RATING: Three slices of pie. APPLE PIE.
