Private Demons: The Life of Shirley Jackson by Judy Oppenheimer, GP Putnam’s Sons 1988, 304 pages Hardcover
I had no idea.
What an interesting life! and yet, I don’t think that says anything at all. You might think by my saying she had an interesting life that she traveled and did amazing things. But no, not really. She was a mom. She was a wife. She wrote books. She collected things.
but WOWZA!
She had agoraphobia. She was a partier and also extremely private. She resented and rejected her mother and also earnestly wanted to please her.
She was complicated!

I didn’t know much about her life either, except that women’s lib didn’t come along soon enough for her. I really want to read about her now, after reading your posts.
The bio mentions this, too. But even though she was one to be pushed around when she knew she was right, she wasn’t a fan of the movement.
Even though I’ve never read her work I bet I’d find her life fascinating.
I thought is very interesting.
Complicated is a very good word to describe Shirley Jackson! I haven’t read this biography yet – must put it on my to-read list.
and join in on the discussion of the Book Menage – it will be fun.
Complicated people should always have the best biographies.
Not that you’ll see on about me anytime soon! ha
This sounds like it would be really good to read!
Not to be missed if you are curious about Jackson.
Interesting and complicated are tempting
