********** Poll closed. NLIM finished at 4 pm 07/20/09. Owen Meany wins!
*****updated to say, poll will be open until I finish Last Night in Montreal. Cuz I’m crazy like that..
I went into a Borders today and managed to escape without spending any money! WOW.
I also want you to know that I finished my sixth book for the month and thus will have completed my goal to read seven – assuming that Last Night in Montreal won’t take me to August 1 to finish! which is my next book. I suppose that is counting my unhatched chickens and putting carts in front of horses but I think I can do it.
I might even be able to read eight books this month considering how many days are left in the month! So… I now invite you to help me pick my that 8th possible book:
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
John Irving’s A Prayer for Owen Meany
My Detachment / Tracy Kidder – would this count for World Cit????
Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns
or should I buy a book from Eva’s recommendations and get started on the World Citizen Challenge already?!
I had a surprise mammogram today. They have a new machine and it really wasn’t that bad. Not comfortable exactly but not painfully painful, either. The wonderful technician told me I had perfect breasts. Isn’t that sweet? I’m also on my way to my goal of getting an ablation. TMI? oh well, too bad. Most of you are my girl’s club, ya know. And if you don’t consider yourself as such for what ever reason, you may just celebrate good health! Raise a toast in celebration! and attempt to only have 3 alcoholic drinks per week?! hmmm. (I’m a bit past that mark… I should cry.)
I finished The Day the World Ended at Little Bighorn and I must say, I learned a lot. I have sympathy for the Lakota people. I think Custer was an idiot (which is neither here nor there) and it will all be in my very-likely-too-long review post hopefully posted this weekend but probably next week. I think it was a 3 pie book – a solid apple pie three slice rating and I would recommend it to anyone interested in our US history.
Don’t forget – you have only to participate in my poll for my next book AND/or scold me to start the World Cit Challenge ASAP. Thank you and have a nice day.

I voted!
Thank you so much!
I voted for John Irving. Reading him right now, too. I’ve only read one book for Eva’s challenge, too! It’s hard to pick up nonfiction sometimes when there are so many hard-to-resist fiction out there. But there are still 5 and a half months, plenty of time.
I’m actually hoping the Irving books wins. at this point, it’s in the lead but the Historian is possible to take the lead and Splendid Suns is only one behind.
Hooray for perfect breats! Sorry…just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to say that :p You’re lucky to escape Border’s without spending any money! As for me, I think I’d be depressed if that happened :p And I voted for The Historian!! Amazing book!!
I was going to edit your comment to change BREATS to BREASTS but you commented again before I had a chance to do so. You are very sweet, too, btw.
Congrats on the breasts, and I hope you hear they’re perfectly healthy as well as perfect. I can’t believe I didn’t vote for the nonfiction book (I’m a traitor) but “The Historian” just seemed like a better summer read. Can’t wait to hear what you think of whatever book wins!
Thank you so much! Yes, healthy is even more exciting than perfect. Poor Tracy Kidder book hasn’t even garnered ONE vote. yet?
I vote for “The Historian”. It kept me interested for 900 pages without being a heavy read.
Thank you so much! and it has vampires, right!? woo hoo
I voted … and it looks like my choice is being picked by lots of others too!!! What a fun idea to let people pick! : )
And my dad loves reading Old West stuff and I think he shares your view that Custer was an idiot. : )
Jenners, this is my first attempt at a poll and I appreciate the response. very fun.
I haven’t read any of those, although I started The Historian and went … huh? and didn’t finish it.
Um. I made a list of Kiwi authors for you:

What did I say before?! I’m scared to find out now, lol
BREATS! You said breats! when I’m sure you meant breasts. right?
Oh man, I really wanted you to tell you to get started on Eva’s challenge, but I figured that would make me a big old hypocrite since I haven’t gotten very far on it either.
I’m glad you didn’t hate The Day the World Ended like the creative lit teacher.
My heart breaks for the Lakota people, too. Their story is so interesting, and so tragic…that’s why I thought the book sounded good. Is it a heartbreaking read?
Oh, Debi, I think I will designate August as Challenge month. My parents will be visiting so it will already by Challenge month! ha! not really – my parents are awesome and I’m looking forward to their visit.
oh – and don’t talk about my Lit friend!! she reads this blog! shhhh. ah, she can handle it. And she’s giving a ton of flack for liking this book and I can’t wait for her to tell my why I’m so off base. oh well. No, not quite a heartbraking read, sad in some respects but also interesting – especially when I get to play off the NEXT book I’m reading and showing some connection. I LOVE that.
I voted for Owen Meany because I want you to tell me if I should bother finishing it. I returned it to the library half-read like a year ago. Feel free to discount my vote if you wanted us to actually vote for something that won’t probably bore you to tears.
oh Ali! really? boring… oh no. I have a friend who says I should read Irving so I can be ‘up on popular culture.’ uh, ok. Do you think this will be all it take?!
I have Owen Meany, but I voted for The Historian. If you end up reading Owen Meany and want to do a joint read along (I promise I won’t race through it), let me know. It might be the inspiration I need to read it.
Thanks, how fun! Will let you know this week.
Custer was an idiot!
That’s really all I remember from visiting the battle site as a kid.
I vote The Historian, which is also on my list. That way we can IRL-mini book club/beer/burgers it together!
Today!! burgers-beer-books!!
Owen Meany here too. I haven’t read it and I want you to tell me if I should!
oh, you really don’t want to give me that power, do you?!
I’m so for The Historian, because it is AWESOME. However, I’m totally okay with Owen Meany because I want to read it and, therefore, want to hear what you think of it.
You’ve stopped by my blog a lot lately, and I wanted to send a very warm thank you your way!!
Well, not many dissenting voices on The Hisorian. and you are most welcome.
I voted…and you better get started….on that challenge.
How on earth do you have a surprise mammo…was it a gift from someone? Are you sure they were licensed to do mamos? LOL
Well, without giving all the details… I had a doc visit and had to give blood and my friend who is the Mammogram Tech told me it had been longer than we thought so she wasnt’ busy and so, I said, “wahoo! let’s do it!” and that’s how you get a surprise mammogram.
I will dedicate August to my World Cit challenge. promise.
You’re a lucky girl. I am the lumpiest person on the planet and they tell me *all* my lumps look cancerous, so I get poked and prodded a lot. Hate that.
I voted! And, I was going to say something else but I have no idea what. I thought I’d just stick around and babble for no reason.
Nancy, this is a Babble-Safe zone; you may babble over anytime about anything at all. Glad to have ya.
A *surprise* mammo? hope all is well.
I voted for A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS, and will tell you that it will not take you until August to finish LAST NIGHT IN MONTREAL; you won’t be able to put it down!
Dawn! countdown to 3-day!! woo hoo!
Yes, I had no idea I could just walk in and see if they were busy and decide to have a mammogram. who knew? It was time.
I’ve only <40 pages to go on LNIM and honestly, I'm not liking it as much as I thought I would. it's still quite good, tho!
Hooray For (perfect) Boobies!! That’s actually the title of a Bloodhound Gang album that gets played a lot at our house and I always thought it was funny when my kids would ask where it was.
I voted for Historian and hoped that either it or Owen Meany would get first place – cause I have both on my shelf unread! That way if you read them and love them I have a reason to stop procrastinating about reading them
Thank you so much for exposing me to new music!
One of these books will likely win, if I was to make a prediction.
I go for The Historian!!
Thank you so much! I am looking forward to this one if it wins or not!
A Thousand Splendid suns please if you are still taking recommendations. I can see the Historian has the max votes, but I think its a chunkster. I try really hard not to recommend chunsters to anyone
I voted
Thanks Violet – yep, your vote counts. I’ve been proud of my chunkster attempts this year so it’s OK.
My vote went for Owen Meany. Read that story years and years ago but loved it. Owen is definitely a memorable character. Well, whatever book wins – I hope you enjoy it!
AND IT WINS! You just made it to the party. Thank you so much.
