Theme for current Weekly Geek 2009-21:  MORE Summer Fun!

This week we had choices to discuss summer reading and/or summer activities. I plan on reading on the boat.     I will show a few photos:

For Weekly Geek 2009-20:  Guilty Pleasures

I don’t call myself a baker nor a pastry expert but I love to bake pies.     I try to fall in love with making pie dough, too, but I get more excited about the INSIDES! all sorts of strange and different kinds of pie, ‘Wierd Pie’.     The strangest I’ve ever concocted had avocado in it and it looked avocado green.   It was NOT a hit, let me tell you – I had to pour a ton of sugar on each bite; I probably did something wrong on this one.

Anyway, that’s one of my fun things to do – I wouldn’t call it a guilty pleasure, but more like an obsession that comes out every so often.    Usually for holidays.      (Hub is requesting a savory pie for Father’s Day….)

See my review of my Pie Bible here.

Weekly Geek 2009-19:   Memorial Day and the Start of Summer

The choices offered had to do with military themed books.     Since this one just arrived in the mail (bookmooch), I want to feature it (but I have yet to read it):

My Detachment tkmdm by Tracy Kidder

From the back of the book jacket:   “This memoir of a young man at war is unlike anything you might expect – at once hilarious and sad, sweet and distressing, a compelling*, candid, and poignantly comic portrait of youthful self-absorption in the midst of the absurdity and tragedy of war.”
- Jonathon Harr, author of A Civil Action and The Lost Painting

    Like those photos!

I have been looking for war books. My Detachment seems good to me. Thanks!

And maybe I ought to try different pies too.

    :D

I have a fascination for water. Love your boat. I find war books a little complicated to read :)

A fascination with water – sounds like a book title? I can’t think of any war books I’ve read except for Red Badge of Courage way back 30 years ago. We’ll have to see.

Your boat looks like a ton of fun. I hope you get out a lot this summer.

Me, too! I’m taking a class on boat navigation and it’s SO FUN!

I joined the WWII challenge, and have yet to read any books for it! My book group is discussing RESISTANCE (Anita Shreve) this week, and I just picked up a new book about Anne Frank … so I’ll get there …

I won’t be reading on a boat this summer :( A small pond near us and the beach/ocean on vacation … plus lots of time in the backyard.

Small ponds are good. We have another boat (a bass boat) which the hub takes on a cranberry feeder pond and it’s the BEST place to read. I expect this poor little boat will be somewhat neglected this year, tho.

I have a challenge I’ve yet to even think about what I’m going to read. No, I did look for titles (months ago) but my motivation is waning. I only like challenges when I hear about them.

What a lovely place to spend summer :)

And your second mate looks adorable ;)

Oscar is starting to get used to this ‘trapped on boat’ experience. He’s so funny – when he wants a change to the agenda, he starts giving us kisses.

i love the water…but i get so seasick it’s not even funny. my grandfather had a boat and each summer i’d climb aboard, hoping that THIS would be the summer i wouldn’t get sick. we’d get 5 minutes from the marina and i’d be green. i’m almost 35 now and STILL get seasick. you make it look like fun, though! i want to go in the boat with you!

There are DRUGS for seasickness, ya know. And there’s a theory – a mind over matter and how you train your eye when you are on a boat… Come my way, and I’ll ’splain it.

    Love the boat pics!

    Thanks Chris.

Awesome boat – I so want one, it is my dream to learn to sail. Can I ask why you decided on the kind of boat you did (is it because of the speed – bet it goes pretty fast :)

    • 14 Care July 14, 2009 at 4:26 pm

Jodie, no – actually, the need for speed was not a driving factor in the decision. It can go fast but I prefer to take it easy. They do say that powerboaters are all about the destination. Truly, sailboat-ing is a lot of work! My husband is more the fishing mindset. We are more suited to the concept of an RV for the water.
