This week’s Geek theme idea is to start the process to publish a Weekly Geek BEST OF 2008 list. Dewey is asking us to post our favorites of those books published this year and to think about volunteering to help her collect and tabulate the titles.
Going through my list of what I’ve read this year, I realize that I am NOT one of those people hot after the books hot off the presses, ya know? I will have to do some more searching for ‘year published’ – I hadn’t been keeping track of that (nor pages) - but I think I’ve only read one that officially came out this year. Happily, I liked this book very much:
The Crime Writer by Gregg Hurwitz
So, that is my nomination for consideration. You can read my review of this mystery here.

And… How did I do with catch up week for Weekly Geek Week 18? Not 100% successful, but I did do some updating, did add the buttons to my sidebar (which reminds me that I also need one for Weekly Geeks!) and I completed a few reviews. I still have two to write and I haven’t yet looked one peep at my challenge status. I did add a few books to my BookMooch inventory and got a bit caught up in reading other blogs.
I am also committing to the Read-A-Thon! but haven’t signed up officially and I’m giving serious thought to helping Dewey with her Best Of project.
Whew. I’m off to read my book now…

I’ve only read seven published-this-year books. So I’ve included all of them in my list.
Seven is a lot! Which one was your most favorite? OK, I’ll just go look at your post.
i haven’t read any of hurwitz’s books before. this one sounds like fun. i’ll have to look for it.
I hadn’t heard of him either; my dad seems to like him.
I keep track of my “books read” in 3 different places, but my database doesn’t have a column for copyright date. Figures. I’ll have to flip through my calendar. This year has been *really* unusual, for me, as far as recent releases go. Usually, I absolutely hate reading what everyone else is reading, but I’ve gotten tons of ARCs and I’ve enjoyed quite a few. Hmm. I guess I can do some geeking. I’ll have to check out your favorite.
I haven’t yet requested any ARCs. It feels like too much pressure – to actually read them in a timely manner AND be kind in review!
I’ve never heard of The Crime Writer, but it sounds terrific! My wishlist is growing by the second…sigh…
I know – it’s overwhelming to read all these blogs rec’ing good books, huh?
Hurray, I’m not the only one! I’m not even sure I’ve read one book published this year yet! Definitely not hot off the presses for me either. But the Crime Writer sounds interesting, so maybe I can squeeze one in before Dewey’s list deadline….
This is true – I have The Lace Reader in my tbr – I can get this done by Dec, I’m hoping.
The Crime Writer seems fine!
Do check my short list
You’ve got a wonderful list. I am now starting to pay attention to year published…
I’ll be cheerleading for the read-a-thon.
Gimme a C. Gimme an A. Gimme a R. Gimme an E.
What’s that spell? CARE!!! Woooohhhh!!
(Can you tell I wasn’t a cheerleader in high school?)
Really? I think this cheer is AWESOME! You Rock Softdrink!
Nice, The Crime Writer sounds like a fun read!
Way to go on your Weekly Geeks catch-up, I didn’t get everything done, but I figured it’s like laundry – a little done is better than none
Catch up days are good even when you don’t get everyone completed. I hope you enjoy The Crime Writer if/when you get a chance to read it.
I’ve heard about The Crime Writer from someone else and had it tentatively on my “Books to Read” list. It’s good to hear a recommendation from a different person. My biggest problem with reading all the time is how much money it takes when you buy the books! We recently found an online site which we posted on our blog that lets you read books for free. Thanks for the book idea! I’ll be keepin an eyeout for more from you
Where Families Connect
Hi Mallory! I know I spend too much on books but the libraries do try and get all books requested – it just might take some time. And I’m having a lot of fun with bookmooch.com.
