What Fun Energy!?!
no, silly! Water for Elephants. By Sara Gruen.
{for those who have no idea where I’m going with this post, you may want to read this and the post just prior. Maybe.}
I told my Octogenarian Book Club (aka the Shaw Reading Group) that I would bring along a CHOICE of three books and I’m thinking that Water For Elephants will be the selection. That could be my reasoning only because I’m not sure what my other possible choices will be? WFE would be a great choice, thank you Lisa. Lots of stuff to talk about, a discussion guide (hint and foreshadowing here – I aim to talk about this again very soon.) and it’s not terribly long.
I took along the list from litlove’s 1000+ Books to Read Before You Die Review (click here for the post) and I promised that I would research which of these might be SHORT. and in LARGE PRINT. I will be off to Barnes and Noble in Braintree on Tuesday. Believe it or not, that is the closest B&N I know of! I think I might do another search – it’s possible that Mansfield might have one…) Silly me, of course, I should do some online research on the books and not just physcial store locations; I know, I know!
I had such a great time at our kick-off meeting and only have a few regrets due to my wanting to please and not overwhelm my new friends (I really should have written down their names. I know their names – just not sure how to spell…) Let’s refer to them as L, M and P. One other lady was not quite up to our spur-of-the-moment ad hoc gathering that occurred in the library last Thursday afternoon. All good; we didn’t decide anything other than the option to proceed ahead cautiously.
I am ever so impressed and humbled by the reading these ladies are doing! They blow me away, for sure! M is reading Ahab’s Wife. big, thick book, if my memory is right. And L is reading Amy Tan’s Saving Fish From Drowning.
No chick lit for this group! Something with substance, I was advised. Serious literature.
And short. They are concerned that this little project of mine will not quite take off if we select something TOO long. I believe I am apt to agree.
I assured (hoped to!) that we make up the rules! This will be fun!!!! lots of exclamation points!!! No pressure, no stress, etc… all those arguments nonbookclubbers bring up.
And then, I showed them this blog.
No, they did not express much interest in the computer, per se. But they were so courteous to humor me and compliment me and make me feel so appreciated. (I think they are sharing this blog address with their family.)
So, consider us spied upon! eeek! (welcome! if you are here because you know L, M or P, then please, do leave a comment and say hello. You can be secretive and not tell me who you are other than what you are comfortable with… I try to review books here and share other strange fun family stuff, occasionally. Welcome to blogworld if you don’t know about it. It’s a fascinating place…)
Hmmm, what else? I’m excited? Yes, I am. I hope this turns into something special.
Plus, I might get sucked into becoming the Shaw Home Librarian. What could I be getting myself into?! My friend Holly says my next career is unfolding before me.

Oh, Care, how exciting! It sounds like you’ve got an ideal book group started! I can’t wait to hear more…
That sounds terrific! I look forward to hearing about more of the adventures.
