As the wind howls and rain slams against the house, I sit cozily at my PC while the dog lazily sleeps by the fire. I need to call Mr. PF – my contact for my next book club opportunity.
CHOICE C in previous post – tell about new book club and ask for HELP!
I take my pup to one of the area nursing homes and had asked the activities director (Mr. PF) if he thought any of the residents would be interested in a book club. He said he would ask around and he left a message the other day, that YES! two of the ladies would be interested!
I called and he wanted me to come in NOW. Well, some mornings, I don’t “get pretty” unless I’ve got something on the schedule, and this day (Monday) I was in no condition to jump and run over to talk with him/them right that second. He said to call the next day. Which I didn’t do.
Eek. cower, sheepish look on face. What a bum, I am! The day got away from me, what can I say?
Now, today, the 2rd day after the COME-RIGHT-NOW (come hither? STOP! request, I’m looking out the window to the messy icky weather.
I better shower first; before I call him,” I think to myself. “What if he wants me to come right away!? WHY CAN’T HE SET A TIME – a distant time that would allow me to ‘get ready!?”
Which is one reason why I didn’t call him yesterday. I guess I’m not as spontaneous, as I like to think I am.
Where was I? BOOK CLUB! I need some book suggestions for me and two elderly ladies to read? I suppose, I should go meet with them and find out what they like to read, what topics might interest them, etc. But I think it might also be nice to have some titles in mind when I do this.
Which is also one of my stumbling blocks to make this call.
You know what they say? When you don’t have enough to do? Nothing gets done. And it’s corollary: If you want something done, give it to a busy person.
OK – I’m off to take a shower and MAKE THAT CALL. Happy Wednesday, Everyone!

Hi Care, how about Water for Elephants? I’m not sure if you read it, but part of it is set in the depression era, and the story is told from the perspective of a 90ish year old man living in a nursing home. It is an excellent read with a happy ending. I predict the old folks would love it!! There’s drama, excitement, a love story, animals, frustration, nostalgia.. what’s not to love?
You asked where I was (or something like that).. thanks for your concern. We had a busy weekend, and I’ve been taking the last few days to catch up and to read. I’ll post later today, hopefully!
Hi Lisa! Yes, that would be good – I just read it and shipped it off to Illinois to my sis-in-law. Enjoy your reading time!
How about The Secret Life of Bees or Snow Flower and the Secret Fan? Almost everyone I know liked both of them.
I just thought of another one that would be really interesting to discuss — THE ALCHEMIST. My book club loved it!
I thought of Snow Flower too, but thought it was more of a ‘women’s’ book, and I didn’t know if men were being included in your book club. It’s a great book but I’m not sure the men would enjoy it as much.
My first thought was The Friday Night Knitting Club…forgive me for stereotyping older women as knitters, but I hope to be that older woman some day!
Secret Life of Bees is a great suggestion.
It’s true, Care, you get so much more done when you’re busy! When you’re not busy, you think you have all the time in the world, and all the time in the world can go by really fast!!
Oh, yeah, I DO remember that you read WFE and were looking for the parallel to the bible story of Jacob. It’s all coming back to me now! You know, it might be easier starting your nursing home book club with a book you are already familiar with.. one that you can be fairly certain will be a hit with the older folks.
